Malaysia's State-of-the-Art Modern-Tropical University Campus

Taylor's Lakeside Campus Set To Open In 2010!

The commencement of work for the RM450 million Taylor's Lakeside Campus in early 2007 is indeed an exciting phase in the 40-year-old history of Taylor's, and underscores its continued commitment to self-development. It marks another major milestone for the institution, where great strides have been made since 1969.

The Lakeside Campus will house all existing tertiary programmes under one roof. Set on 27 acres of tropical greenery near Jalan PJS 7/5, the campus is surrounded by a revived 5.5 acre man-made lake, as well as a landscape of water plants, trees and flowering shrubs, and groundcover that provides a rich and stimulating natural environment in the neighbourhood.

The completion of Taylor's Lakeside Campus is another step forward towards realising Taylor's mission to become a university of 20,000 students renowned for its teaching excellence and the distinctive quality of its graduates.

From the Main Drop-off down the Grand Staircase, proceed to the University Square and Amphitheatre. This popular and important gathering area will be flanked by the Commercial Block, Residences and Hotel on the west, Administration Offices, Student Union and a Multi-Purpose Hall on the north, Academic Blocks on the east and the lake on the south.

Plays, recitals and other performances will be staged at the 'Art Precinct', formed by the Experimental Theatre, the 600-pax Auditorium, 300-pax Lecture Theatre and the outdoor Amphitheatre. The pride of the campus will undeniably be the Library, a splendid 4-storey glass edifice that warrants panoramic views of the lake.

Sheltered, landscaped promenades will provide easy access to scores of world-class facilities. Restaurants, culinary suites and housekeeping suites for the Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts faculty. Fully-equipped laboratories for advancing skills and knowledge in Science, Computer, Audio and Video, Engineering and Architecture, Building and Design. A Moot Court for lawyers to practice making a case.

The beautiful new Taylor's Lakeside Campus will provide all the right conditions for a vibrant exchange between academic, commercial, social and leisure activities. More than just a home to the student population, it will be the nurturing ground for an energetic and dynamic new community.

Taylor's Lakeside Campus will be the vehicle for Taylor's to further enhance the delivery of its purpose, which is to educate the youth of the world to take their productive place as leaders in the global community.

MALAYSIAN CELEBRITIES GO GREEN

Baki Zainal took one look at the sky and decided it was time his nephews relived his childhood of grass romping and water splashing. In an impromptu decision, he bundled them together, changed them all into swimmers and brought them to the Sg Ulu Yam near Genting Highlands.

But when they actually arrived at the river, it was a sight Baki could not erase from his mind.

Plastic bags floated along the bank of the river. Aluminum cans, papers, plastic bottles, snack wrappers...

A lone yellow butterfly, unable to find its natural food, landed on an empty Mamee packet, attracted by its similar yellow tones, eating the leftover Ajinomoto flavouring.

For the next hour, Baki and his 3 nephews slowly and meticulously, gathered the rubbish, only able to clear a 5 meter radius.

And that thought. The thought of his nephews. His future kids. Not being able to swim and play in mother nature as he did...

It was what made him decide that he needed to not just sit and wait for people to realize what they are doing, but to get up and actually *do *something.

In October 2009, together with Azizi Zakaria, Dina, and Soo Wincci, Baki formed Malaysian Celebrities Go Green.

Partnering with Kiehl's, also known for their environmentalist movements, they gathered more celebrities in different events and junctures to get the word out on Going Green.

Most recently, the Fantastic-MCGG-Four, together with the Leo Clubs of Ipoh, went to Sungai Kinta to clean a part of the river. Yes. You read right. Clean.

Soo Wincci, ex-Miss Malaysia, rushed back to Malaysia from Taiwan just to participate in this environmental movement. Beauty queen or no, she too dug her hands into the grime in hopes of making a positive impact.

Azizi Zakaria quipped, “Many may think that celebrities do this sort of things to obtain glamour and popularity. Well for me, I’d rather look at it from a different perspective! I would say that I *am* indeed using my popularity to show support! If my fans out there would start using one less a plastic bag in support of what I do, then... why not? At least, it got someone’s attention!”

So true isn't it?

The celebs are doing it. The kids are doing it. Isn't it about time we did it? Go green people. And I don't mean Shrekalike.

Making This World A Greener Place

Holiday Inn Melaka today visited SRJK Pay Fong 3 Primary School to speak to students about the importance of conservations as part of the company’s CSR project. The key to create a meaningful environmental change starting from schools is to get buy-in and support from parents, teachers and most importantly to instill and nurture the younger generation on saving the planet.

This eco school going project will be conducted by colleagues of Holiday Inn Melaka throughout the year who will be visiting different primary schools in Melaka each Mondays to speak about the importance of conservations. Each visit will be conducted in 30 minutes followed by activities to make a lasting impression on the students about eco projects.

“The objective of this community project is to help sustain life in forests, rivers, villages, cities and the community. We want a better life for our future generations and we conduct all CSR projects based on 4 Es (eg: Education, Entrepreneurship, Expression of Care and Environment) which is lined up for the year. This school eco project falls under the Education pillar where we would like to instill good conservation knowledge starting from the younger generation,” commented Christoph Voegeli, General Manager of Holiday Inn Melaka who is currently supporting all ongoing CSR projects such as Green Engage where the objective is to reduce energy, water and waste covering every aspect of the hotel lifecycle and rainwater harvesting where harvesting systems collect rainwater in tanks and it's an effective and low-cost way of reducing demand on water supplies.

“Schools will serve as a catalyst for the community at large. We call this the “spillover effect” of the green initiative. By involving parents, teachers, administrators and local businesses in this, we find that the environmentally responsible behavior that is modeled at school is taken into the community at large. Parents who see recycling in the classrooms often report reinforcing that behavior at home, and working to institute recycling at work, as well. Communities who support the efforts of green initiative in schools often look for ways to expand recycling and waste reduction efforts citywide and I am very happy to see Holiday Inn Melaka initiating such responsible project,” mentioned Mr Peter Tseng, one of the boards of directors for the school who attended the event.

The launch was also attended by Malaysian Celebrities Go Green (www.mcg2.com) co-founders, actor/host Baki Zainal from 8TV, Soo Wincci, Miss Malaysia and singers Dina Nadzir and Azizi Zakaria and our business partner, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd led by Michel Mah, Regional Head and team.

Founder of MCG2 Baki Zainal said, "We hope that as celebrities, we will be able to use our celebrity status to bring Eco-projects to another level, reaching out to more people". Up and rising singer, Azizi also added that even though he has a busy schedule, he still champions something that he believes in as MCG2 encourages the younger generation to instil the love of taking care of our mother nature!” SooWincci, Miss Malaysia Universe 2008/09 presenter now stressed that her fans out there would use one less a plastic bag a day. Thus turning "green" would be easier for our nation.

Our next upcoming project is to work with our business partner in a Beach Clean Up and supporting Earth Hour where 2800 bulbs will be switched off on the 27th March 2010 @ 8:30pm for an hour. Last but not least, we are still looking for volunteers to donate as much Ring Pulls as possible for us to continue sending it to the Prosthesis Centre in order to donate more artificial limbs to the disabled. Together we can make world a better place.

Supermodel Amber Chia

Supermodel Amber Chia confirmed in a Tweet on Monday that she has married to her boyfriend of one-and-a-half years in Bali but declined to reveal her new husband’s identity.

Even the pre-wedding pictures of them in Bali, released by Amber’s publicity company Orchan Consulting Asia, revealed little of the groom’s face.

Amber was apologetic about not wanting to reveal her husband’s identity because of his “shy nature” and her desire to keep him out of the spotlight.

A statement by Orchan said that the couple’s exclusive wedding ceremony was held at the Diwangkara Holiday Villa Resort in Bali on Thursday after five months of planning.

It was attended by 40 friends and members from both sides of the family, including celebrity friends like TV host Daphne Iking, violinist Dennis Lau and catwalk guru Benjamin Toong.

Amber's wedding dresses, seven in total, were specifically designed for her by two of Malaysia's top designers, Keith Kee and Alvin Tay.

No further details of “Mr Amber Chia” were released, except that he was a Malaysian businessman with businesses in Australia and Hong Kong.

Pre-wedding photographs of Amber and her husband, taken at scenic locations around the island were also released.

However, they were composed in such a way that they do not reveal too much of the groom’s face.

Amber said she and her husband were looking forward to settling into life together and motherhood was in the books for Amber, 28.

“We have discussed the future, and we definitely want to start a family together,” said Amber in the statement, adding she would love to be a mother before she was 30.

The statement said that due to Amber's tight schedule and the upcoming honeymoon, the couple were prepared to meet the media only after end-April.

Hacker gets another 20-year prison sentence

A Miami computer hacker was sentenced to 20 years in prison yesterday for leading the largest U.S. identity-theft ring, stealing 130 million credit- and debit-card records from Heartland Payment Systems Inc. and other companies.

Albert Gonzalez, 28, was sentenced in federal court in Boston after he pleaded guilty to thefts from Heartland, 7-Eleven Inc., Delhaize Group's Hannaford Brothers Co. and two unidentified national retailers. Another judge also sentenced Gonzalez Thursday to 20 years for the theft of 40 million credit- and debit-card records from retailers including TJX Cos., OfficeMax Inc. and BJ's Wholesale Club Inc. The sentence imposed yesterday will run at the same time as the one set Thursday.

"This is a very sophisticated theft, but it is theft," U.S. District Judge Douglas Woodlock said yesterday in sentencing Gonzalez. "It's no different than picking someone's pocket."

Woodlock also imposed a fine of $25,000 on Gonzalez, who faced as many as 35 years in prison. The judge said he will determine the restitution amount later. Gonzalez pleaded guilty last year to cases filed in New Jersey, Boston and New York. The New Jersey case was transferred to Boston.

Prosecutors said in court filings that Gonzalez and his confederates created the largest identity-theft ring in U.S. history, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in losses.

Suspected Twitter infiltrator: 'I'm a nice hacker'

He's unemployed and isn't much of a computer expert. The Frenchman accused of infiltrating Twitter and peeping at the accounts of President Barack Obama and singers Britney Spears and Lily Allen says he wanted to reveal just how vulnerable online data systems are to break-ins — and he says he didn't mean any harm.

"I'm a nice hacker," suspect Francois Cousteix told France 3 television Thursday, a day after he was released from police questioning, adding that his goal was to warn Internet users about data security.

"Hacker Croll," as he was known online, is accused of breaking into Twitter administrators' accounts and copying confidential data — as well as peeping at Obama's and the singers' accounts, though he didn't have access to sensitive information about them, a French prosecutor said.

FBI agents sat in on the sessions while French police questioned the young man for two days, said Jean-Yves Coquillat, prosecutor in Clermont-Ferrand, where the suspect will be tried in June for hacking.

If convicted on the charge of breaking into a data system, he risks up to two years in prison and a euro30,000 ($40,068) fine. The suspect lives near Clermont-Ferrand in central France.

"He says it's the challenge, the game, that made him do it," Coquillat said. Officials say preliminary investigations suggest Hacker Croll did not tweet in other peoples' names or try to make money out of his information.

"He had access to elements that were so confidential that he could very well have profited from them" through blackmail, for example, said Adeline Champagnat of the French police office on information technology crimes.

She compared the hacker's actions to "a burglar breaking into the headquarters of a big company, able to look at the files of the all employees and clients, with their passwords and confidential information."

"In a way, he succeeded in taking control of Twitter," Champagnat said.

Twitter, based in San Francisco, declined to comment on the case Thursday.

At one point, Champagnat said, the hacker attempted to find a password for Obama's account but didn't follow through with it. With administrator access, "he didn't even need" Obama's password, she said — but hacking into the president's account wasn't his goal.

Cousteix, who was identified as being 23 or 24, said he just wanted to prove a point about Internet security.

"It's a message I wanted to get out to Internet users, to show them that no system is invulnerable," he told France 3 television.

Hacker Croll confessed to the hacking under questioning, and analysis of his computer backs up his statements, police and the prosecutor said.

The suspect, who lives with his parents and has no college degree, didn't have any special computer training, the prosecutor said.

His technique was to get administrators' e-mail passwords' reset by correctly answering their security questions using information about his prey that he gathered from blogs and other public sites, officials said.

Twitter said in July that it was the victim of a security breach. Co-founder Biz Stone wrote at the time that the personal e-mail of an unnamed Twitter administrative employee was hacked, and through that the attacker got access to the employee's Google Apps account.

The French prosecutor said the suspect infiltrated the accounts of "several" Twitter administrative employees. He was able to access information such as contracts with partners and resumes from job applicants, Coquillat said.

Hacker Croll e-mailed some of the documents to TechCrunch, a widely read technology blog, and it subsequently published some of them, including financial projections. The material was also published on several French sites.

Some of the material was more embarrassing than damaging, like floor plans for new office space and a pitch for a Twitter TV show.

Using the administrator logins, Hacker Croll looked at Twitter details of Obama, Allen, Spears and other well-known personalities and was able to see information such as IP addresses, when they were last connected and when they signed up, French officials said.

Financial system ready for 10MP

Malaysia's financial system has held its ground despite the adverse economic conditions of the past year and is indicating readiness to support the forthcoming 10th Malaysia Plan (2011-2015).

While the economy contracted 1.7 per cent in 2009, threats to financial stability were identified and responses put in place early, Bank Negara Malaysia says in its 2009 Annual Report.

During the weak economic environment of 2009, there were concerns of rising debts, massive layoffs and business closures.

But overall, Malaysia only experienced a technical recession and not a widespread one. There were layoffs and business closures but these were not as widespread as initially feared.

Amid the weaknesses, the domestic financial markets remained orderly and with ample liquidity in the system, it was able to continue carrying out its role in financial intermediation, payment and settlement and in providing other financial services.

Overall loan delinquencies continued to decline in 2009, contrary to inital expectations and Malaysian banks were able to continue providing enough credit at reasonable costs.

Bank Negara and the financial sector as a whole referred to lessons learnt during the Asian financial crisis a decade ago and dedicated resources to banks to enable them to attend to borrowers' problems fast and with much flexibility.

There was a sense of high aversion to risk in the early part of 2009 but trading liquidity in both the equity and and corporate bond markets improved significantly from the second quarter of the year.

In the non-financial sectors, households and businesses faced enormous challenges but were generally able to withstand the pressures.

Consumer sentiments reached a low level early 2009 before turning sharply positive in the second half of the year with more signs of improvement in the macroeconomic environment.

In the financial sector, about 70 per cent of total capital of the Malaysian banking industry comprise Tier-1 capital, while for the insurance sector 93 per cent of capital comprised Tier-1.

HSBB

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM), the country's dominant fixed-line operator, has finally revealed the pricing for its High Speed Broadband (HSBB) access to industry players, more than one year after the project was first announced.

This means that service providers, including mobile operators, broadband service providers and pay-TV operators will now know how much it will cost them to ride on TM's fibre optics network to offer services like video-on-demand, Internet protocol television (IPTV), voice call and Internet surfing.

Video on Demand (VOD) or Audio Video on Demand (AVOD) are systems which allow users to select and watch/listen to video or audio content on demand.

Television VOD systems either stream content through a set-top box, allowing viewing in real time, or download it to a device such as a computer, digital video recorder (also called a personal video recorder) or portable media player for viewing at any time. The majority of cable- and telco-based television providers offer both VOD streaming, including pay-per-view and free content, whereby a user buys or selects a movie or television program and it begins to play on the television set almost instantaneously, or downloading to a DVR rented from the provider, or downloaded onto a pc, for viewing in the future. Internet television, using the Internet, is an increasingly popular form of video on demand.

Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is a system through which digital television service is delivered using the architecture and networking methods of the Internet Protocol Suite over a packet-switched network infrastructure, e.g., the Internet and broadband Internet access networks, instead of being delivered through traditional radio frequency broadcast, satellite signal, and cable television (CATV) formats. See Internet television.

IPTV services may be classified into three main groups: live television, time-shifted programming, and content (or video) on demand. It is distinguished from general Internet-based or web-based multimedia services by its on-going standardization process (e.g., ETSI) and preferential deployment scenarios in subscriber-based telecommunications networks with high-speed access channels into end-user premises via set-top boxes or other customer-premises equipment.

Malaysian Payments Company MOL Global Snaps Up Friendster

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ — MOL Global Pte. Ltd. (“MOL Global”), an affiliate of leading online payment solutions provider MOL AccessPortal Berhad (“MOL”), and Friendster, Inc. (“Friendster”), the operator of a top global web site based on traffic and a leading social network in Asia, announced today they have entered into a definitive agreement under which MOL Global will acquire 100% of Friendster. The principal shareholder of MOL is Tan Sri Vincent Tan, the Chairman and CEO of Berjaya Corporation Berhad, a leading, diversified Malaysian conglomerate that has annual revenues in excess of US$1.8 billion. Following the acquisition, the operations of MOL and Friendster will be combined to create Asia’s largest end-to-end content, distribution and commerce network, pairing MOL’s offline retail channel partners and payment platform with Friendster’s large online footprint, social network and user community in Asia.

“The merger with Friendster will continue to transform the social networking industry, combining a highly intuitive and successful social media site and online marketing channel with an integrated payment platform and content network which includes games, goods, gifts, music and video. We are creating a unique company that will be well positioned to provide content to a huge, regional user base, here in Southeast Asia,” said Ganesh Kumar Bangah, president and chief executive officer of MOL.

MOL uses the leverage of a network of over 500,000 physical and virtual payment channels across 75 countries worldwide to collect payments for content and services. Its core markets are Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and India. MOL has relationships with over 70 online game publishers that have a suite of over 200 online game titles. It also has partnerships with music, movie and video content owners and distributors across the region.

“Friendster and MOL are both industry pioneers and are close partners. This combination is a natural progression of our relationship and will be an industry-changing event,” said Richard Kimber, chief executive officer at Friendster. “The new combined entity gives Friendster the kind of financial backing, retail distribution, and e-commerce infrastructure that will enable us to accelerate our strategy and create a locally relevant, fun experience for our users in Asia, both on and offline.”

In 2003, Friendster pioneered social networking, and today is a leading web site in Asia, with over 75 million registered users and over 90 percent of daily traffic coming from the region. Asian youths have embraced Friendster and use it as their primary means of connecting to and keeping in touch with friends, self-expression, sharing content and news with friends, and as a source of entertainment. Friendster users also enjoy local music, gifting, photo sharing, online games, and using Friendster on their mobile devices. All of these are incorporated in Friendster’s product suite and will be further developed over time with MOL, specifically with Asian youths in mind.

Friendster and MOL entered a global partnership in October of this year where MOL was appointed to provide an integrated payments platform, as a foundation for The Friendster Wallet and The Friendster Gift Shop, for Friendster’s users. The new combined entity will now build upon that initial set of products to deliver a content distribution network and e-commerce platform, enabling a wide array of content to be distributed to Friendster’s community and monetize via micro-transactions using MOL’s payment platform. MOL will use the leverage of its physical distribution networks to localize and extend the online reach of social networking in Southeast Asia to the physical world through Tan Sri Vincent Tan’s substantial assets across Malaysia and the region, including retail franchises in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia such as Starbucks, 7-Eleven, Borders, Krispy Kreme, Wendy’s and Papa John’s Pizza, just to name a few.

Friendster recently launched a new brand and web site packed with new features representing a significant milestone in the company’s history and further signifying the company’s evolution to focus on the Asian youth market. The notable changes include a new fun-centric brand, and a redesigned web site with a focus on local relevance, fun and simplicity.

The combined entity will maintain offices in various locations, around the world, including Mountain View, CA (USA), the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore. Ganesh Kumar Bangah will become the Group Chief Executive Officer of the combined entity while Richard Kimber will become the Non-Executive Chairman.

TM Invests RM1.9 Billion, To Date, To Develop HSBB

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 (Bernama) -- Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) has spent about RM1.9 billion and the government some RM990 million, todate, in rolling out the high-speed broadband (HSBB), Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa said Thursday.

The RM11.3 billion project, signed in September 2008, is a public-private partnership initiative between TM and the government to develop next generation HSBB infrastructure and services for the nation.

TM is putting up RM8.9 billion while the government is contributing RM2.4 billion on an incurred claims basis based on project milestones reached by TM.

Speaking to reporters here, Zamzamzairani said TM would continue to assume a role not only in providing HSBB to high-impact economic areas but also other services like Streamyx outside the focused area.

"We are expecting to get about 750,000 premises passed by end of this year," he said adding that pyhsical work for the 44 exchanges, out of 95 exchanges nationwide, would be completed by year-end.

The HSBB retail offering will comprise triple-play services of voice, video (IPTV and video on demand), and high-speed Internet starting from speeds of 10Mbps and upwards.

The initial four areas that will be covered by TM HSBB services, at the time of service launch, are Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Bangsar.

Zamzamzairani said the roll-out of HSBB would contribute about one per cent to Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

"This one per cent is only direct impact, we expect it could be more than one per cent contribution to GDP if we are able to reach the targeted penetration rate," he said.

As of March 3, 2010, the household penetration rate stood at 33.2 per cent.
